Where to Catch a Hockey Game In and Near New York

Hockey season is just about here! Between major and minor league teams in the state and in nearby states like New Jersey and Connecticut, New York is a huge hockey hub. There’s no shortage of teams that’ll be kicking off their seasons soon. Whether you have a little one currently on the ice or not, going to a hockey game is a great way to spend time as a family.

Grab your hockey sweaters and hats and hit the road to catch a hockey game with some of these amazing teams!

Major League

New York Rangers

Located right in the heart of the city, catch a Rangers game in Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are back after an impressive playoff run last season, making it all the way to Eastern Conference Finals before losing to the then-defending back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Have a night in the city with your family and experience the Broadway Blueshirts in person.

New York Islanders

Catch the Islanders as they kick off their first full season in Belmont Park’s new UBS Arena. All-Star Mat Barzal just signed a huge eight-year contract extension with the team. Catch this Long Island team as they try to reclaim their spot in the NHL Playoffs this season.

Buffalo Sabres

If you’re looking for a hockey road trip, head to a Buffalo Sabres game! Watch veterans like goalie Craig Anderson alongside rising stars like Owen Power, the first overall pick in the 2021 entry draft.

Buffalo Beauts

While you’re in Buffalo, be sure to catch a Buffalo Beauts game. They’re a women’s hockey team in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) playing in Northtown Center in Amherst, a suburb of Buffalo.

Metropolitan Riveters

If you’re looking to get even more acquainted with PHF hockey, check out the Metropolitan Riveters. They’re a perennial contender for the Isobel Cup (the PHF championship tournament) and they’re headed by Madison Packer, one of the league’s longest tenured athletes. Plus, they play in the American Dream Meadowlands ice rink in the American Dream mall, making it the perfect main event for a day out.

New Jersey Devils

A night at a Devils game is a quick NJTransit ride away. Watch players like Nico Hischier, Dougie Hamilton and Jack Hughes on the ice. The Devils have a solid line up of theme nights this season, including Star Wars Night, Jewish Community Night, Marvel Superhero Night and Pride Night.

Minor League

Adirondack Thunder

This ECHL team based out of Glen Falls is an affiliate team of the New Jersey Devils. In many cases, you can get tickets for these games for less than the cost of a movie ticket. Make a day trip to Glen Falls for a Thunder game!

Syracuse Crunch

If you’re making a trip up to Syracuse, add a Syracuse Crunch game to your itinerary. They’re the primary development team for the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have been regular favorites to win the Stanley Cup in past seasons, so there’s a chance you could be watching a future champion!

Utica Comets

Based in Utica, New York, the Utica Comets are affiliated with the New Jersey Devils. If you have a Devils fan in the family, catching a Comets game or two is a must. See future Devils before they work their way up.

Bridgeport Islanders

Here’s a must-do for families full of Islanders fans. The Bridgeport Islanders, the AHL affiliate for the New York Islanders, play in Total Mortgage Arena in Bridgeport, CT. It’s the Islanders’ 50th anniversary season, so you’ll definitely want to catch a game this season!

Hartford Wolf Pack

If you’re looking for more professional hockey in Connecticut, head down to a Hartford Wolf Pack game. They’re affiliated with the New York Rangers, making them a great night out for Connecticut-based Rangers fans who can’t make it to Madison Square Garden on a regular basis.
